Everyone was looking for the appointed day – 20th April, 2015 – to celebrate the Shasti Poorthi / 60th Birthday of a great Kathak Mastreao and Guru Pandit Krishan Mohan Mishra.
The stage was set up with absolute grace and granduer at the Kamani Auditorium last evening. The Kathak Legand Padma Vibhushan Pandit Birju Maharaj was the Chief Guest for this function. He was joined by the famous Master musician Pandit Sajan Mishra – one of the Raja-Sajan Mishra duo – who originally hailing from the mystic city of Banaras have brought grace to the National Capital by settling down here.
A galaxy of performing Artists and distinguished guests were present. The tone for the programme was initiated with a jugal bandi with me on the Lalitaa Veenaa and Shri Pritam Ghoshal on the Sarod invoking “Raag Durga”. Masterly support on the tabla was provided by Shri Akhtar Hasan and Shri Durjouy Bhomick. This was followed by presentation of Kathak by the students of Pandit Krishan Mohan Mishra from Abhyas – an organization runby his disciples.
Then came Master piece from Pandit Krishan Mohan Mishra and Pandit Ram Mohan Mishra – the two brothers who are leading lights of the Kalka - Bindidin Gharana. Pandit Krishan Mohan Mishra looked as though he has started another innings in dance at the age of 60 – such was the agility of the Kathak Mastreo.
A grand trio of the leading lights of Kathak by Ms. Shaswati Sen, Smt. Baswati Mishra and Smt. Ipshita Mishra, brought in nostalgic memories of Mahakavi Kalidaas scripted epic “Meghdoot”.
The vocal suppoort provided by Smt. Sudha Raghuraman was full of variety. She was supported skilfully by her husband and noted flautist Shri Raghuram and Pandit Govind Chakraborty on the Tabla.
The Grand finale was carried out by the ever young – ever green – Pandit Birju Maharaj who along with the support of his son Deepak Maharaj displayed Classical Abhinaya througha Thumari emanating out of his melefluous voice.
There could not have been a more apporpriate way to commemorate the 60th Birthday of a greate Kathak Guru.
Salulations to all the Great Masteros of Music, Dance and Art of this great country.
